The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Oklahoma income tax follows the percentage method in Packet OW-2 for 2026: $1,000 a year for each OK-W-4 allowance comes off, then the single or married table applies (2.5%, 3.5% and 4.5% above a threshold), and the result is rounded to the whole dollar, as Oklahoma requires.
What this leaves out
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Nothing until pay passes the table threshold (for a single employee paid monthly, $842 after allowances), then 2.5%, 3.5% and 4.5%, rounded to the whole dollar.
How is Oklahoma tax worked out?
The Oklahoma Tax Commission's example: $1,825 semi-monthly, married, two allowances: $1,825 − $83.34 = $1,741.66; $9.10 plus 4.5% of the amount over $1,129 is $36.67, rounded to $37.
What if an employee is married but wants more withheld?
Choosing married but withhold at the higher single rate on the OK-W-4 uses the single table.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Oklahoma as the work state, it can calculate the same Oklahoma line.
