The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- New Mexico income tax comes from the percentage method tables in FYI-104 for wages paid from 1 January 2026: a table for each pay period and filing status, from 1.5% just above the no-tax amount up to 5.9% on the highest pay. New Mexico uses the federal W-4 filing status; there is no state form.
What this leaves out
- Extra New Mexico withholding the employee asks for (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

New Mexico paycheck calculator: common questions
Does New Mexico have its own W-4?
No. Employees fill in a copy of the federal Form W-4 marked for New Mexico withholding only, and the employer uses its filing status with the New Mexico tables.
How much New Mexico tax is withheld on $1,000 a week?
From FYI-104's example, married: $12.77 plus 4.3% of the $210 over $790, which is $21.80. An extra $20 requested by the employee makes $41.80.
What are the New Mexico withholding rates for 2026?
The tables step through 1.5%, 3.2%, 4.3%, 4.7%, 4.9% and 5.9% of the pay above each threshold, with thresholds that differ for single, married and head of household.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a New Mexico pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, New Mexico as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same New Mexico line.
