The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Kansas income tax follows the percentage formula in the KW-100 Withholding Tax Guide: the K-4 withholding allowance amount is taken off the pay (the first allowance, or the first two at the Joint rate, is worth $9,160 a year; each other allowance $2,320), and the rest is taxed at 5.2% and 5.58% above the threshold in the table for the pay period and allowance rate.
What this leaves out
- K-4 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Kansas paycheck calculator: common questions
What are the Kansas withholding rates?
Two rates: 5.2%, and 5.58% on higher pay. Each pay period's table starts above a small threshold and switches to 5.58% at a higher amount, for example $1,109 for a single person paid twice a month.
How much Kansas tax comes out of $2,000 paid twice a month?
From the KW-100 example, married at the Joint rate with three allowances: the allowance amount is $860 ($763.33 for the couple plus $96.67 for one dependent), leaving $1,140; 5.2% of the $797 over $343 is $41.44.
Should I mark Single or Joint on the K-4?
Single if you're single, or married with a spouse who has income. Joint if you're married and your spouse has no income. Without a K-4, the employer withholds at the Single rate with no allowances.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a Kansas pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Kansas as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Kansas line.
