The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Michigan income tax follows Form 446, the 2026 Michigan Income Tax Withholding Guide: 4.25% of pay after the personal exemption of $5,900 a year for each MI-W4 exemption, divided over the pay periods in the year.

Michigan paycheck calculator: common questions
What is the Michigan income tax rate for 2026?
A flat 4.25%. The personal exemption for 2026 is $5,900 for each exemption claimed on the MI-W4.
How is Michigan tax withheld from a paycheck?
The pay period's share of the exemptions comes off the pay, and 4.25% of the rest is withheld. For example, $1,000 a week with one exemption: $1,000 − $113.46 = $886.54, and 4.25% of that is $37.68.
Does this include Detroit or other city tax?
No. Detroit and about two dozen other Michigan cities have their own income tax. Add it on the pay stub from your payroll.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Michigan as the work state, it can calculate the same Michigan line.
