The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Wisconsin income tax follows the alternate method in Publication W-166: annual pay less a deduction that shrinks as pay rises ($6,702 for single filers below $17,780 a year, gone at $73,630; $9,461 for married filers, gone at $73,032), less $400 per WT-4 exemption, taxed at 3.54%, 4.65%, 5.30% and 7.65%, divided over the pay periods.
What this leaves out
- WT-4 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Wisconsin paycheck calculator: common questions
How is Wisconsin tax withheld from a paycheck?
Pay is annualized, the sliding deduction for the WT-4 status and $400 for each exemption are taken off, the rest is taxed on the withholding schedule (3.54% to 7.65%), and the year's tax is divided by the pay periods.
How much Wisconsin tax is withheld on $500 a week?
From Publication W-166's example, single with three exemptions: $26,000 a year less a $5,715.60 deduction and $1,200 of exemptions leaves $19,084.40; the tax on that is $745.78 a year, or $14.34 a week.
Do I use the W-4 or the WT-4 for Wisconsin?
Wisconsin's own Form WT-4 sets the status and exemptions for state withholding. A federal W-4 can't be used to claim exemption from Wisconsin withholding.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a Wisconsin pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Wisconsin as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Wisconsin line.
