The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Ohio income tax follows the Department of Taxation's percentage method tables effective 1 August 2026: $650 a year for each IT 4 exemption comes off the pay, then 1.6%, 2.99% and 3.4% apply in three brackets.
- Pay dates from 1 January to 31 July 2026 used the tables effective 1 October 2025 (1.775%, 2.99% and 3.64%). The pay stub generator picks the right table from the pay date.
What this leaves out
- School district income tax and city (municipal) income tax
- IT 4 line 5 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Ohio paycheck calculator: common questions
How much Ohio tax comes out of a paycheck?
From 1 August 2026, Ohio withholds 1.6% of taxable wages up to about $26,050 a year, 2.99% up to $100,000, and 3.4% above that, after $650 a year for each IT 4 exemption. Before August the rates were 1.775%, 2.99% and 3.64%.
Does this include Ohio city and school district tax?
No. Most Ohio cities, and many school districts, have their own income tax on top of the state's. Their rates depend on where the employee lives and works, so add them on the pay stub from your payroll.
What are exemptions on the Ohio IT 4?
One for the employee, one for a spouse who doesn't claim their own, and one for each dependent, totalled on line 4. Each one lowers taxable wages by $650 a year.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Ohio as the work state, it can calculate the same Ohio line, using the table for the pay date.
