The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Connecticut income tax follows TPG-211, the 2026 Withholding Calculation Rules: the annualized salary sets a personal exemption for the CT-W4 code, the rest is taxed from 2% to 6.99%, a 2% phase-out add-back and a recapture apply at higher incomes, and a personal tax credit reduces the result. The annual amount is divided over the pay periods.

Connecticut paycheck calculator: common questions
What are the Connecticut withholding codes?
The employee picks A, B, C, D or F on line 1 of Form CT-W4 from their filing status and income. Each code has its own exemption, tax bands and credit in the withholding rules; code D gets no personal exemption and no personal tax credit.
What is the Connecticut income tax rate?
From 2% to 6.99%. Lower-income employees also get a personal exemption and a personal tax credit that shrink as income rises.
Why does Connecticut tax rise faster at some incomes?
At higher incomes Connecticut phases out the 2% rate and recaptures the benefit of the lower brackets, which the withholding rules add back.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Connecticut as the work state, it can calculate the same Connecticut line.
