The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- North Carolina income tax follows the percentage method in NC-30 (2026): the pay period's share of the N.C. standard deduction ($12,750 a year, or $19,125 for head of household) and $2,500 a year for each NC-4 allowance come off first, then 4.09% applies (the 3.99% income tax rate plus 0.1%), rounded to the nearest dollar.
What this leaves out
- NC-4 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

North Carolina paycheck calculator: common questions
What is the North Carolina income tax rate for 2026?
3.99% for tax year 2026. Employers withhold at 4.09% (the rate plus 0.1%, as NC-30 instructs) on the pay left after the standard deduction and NC-4 allowances.
How is North Carolina tax withheld from a paycheck?
The pay period's share of the N.C. standard deduction and of each NC-4 allowance comes off the pay, and 4.09% of the rest is withheld, rounded to the nearest dollar. For example, $450 a week, single, two allowances: $450 − $245.19 − $96.16 = $108.65, and 4.09% of that rounds to $4.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with North Carolina as the work state, it can calculate the same state line.
