Rhode Island paycheck calculator
Short answer
A Rhode Island paycheck in 2026 loses Rhode Island income tax at 3.75% to 5.99% after $1,000 a year for each RI W-4 exemption, plus 1.1% TDI on wages up to $100,000. On $60,000 a year paid every two weeks with one exemption, that is $85.10 of state tax and $25.38 of TDI per paycheck.
| Item | Per paycheck | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,307.69 | $59,999.94 |
| Federal income tax | −$193.08 | −$5,020.08 |
| Social security | −$143.08 | −$3,720.08 |
| Medicare | −$33.46 | −$869.96 |
| Rhode Island income tax | −$85.10 | −$2,212.60 |
| RI TDI | −$25.38 | −$659.88 |
| Take-home pay | $1,827.59 | $47,517.34 |
Worked example: $60,000 a year in Rhode Island
A single employee on $60,000 a year, paid every two weeks, with a 2026 federal Form W-4 left at the defaults and one exemption on the RI W-4. Each paycheck is $2,307.69.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,307.69 |
| Federal income tax | $193.08 |
| Social security (6.2%) | $143.08 |
| Medicare (1.45%) | $33.46 |
| Rhode Island income tax | $85.10 |
| RI TDI (1.1%) | $25.38 |
| Take-home pay | $1,827.59 |
The state line: $2,307.69 less one exemption of $38.46 leaves $2,269.23, which is under the first bracket's $3,156, so the tax is 3.75% of it, $85.10. TDI is 1.1% of the full $2,307.69.
Rhode Island withholding rates for 2026

The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Rhode Island income tax follows the Division of Taxation's 2026 percentage method: take the pay period's wages, subtract the period's amount for each RI W-4 exemption ($19.23 weekly, $38.46 every two weeks, $41.67 twice a month, $83.33 monthly), then apply the period's table at 3.75%, 4.75% and 5.99%. The same table applies whatever the filing status.
- Once the period's wages pass the booklet's limit ($290,800 a year, $5,592.31 a week), exemptions are worth nothing and the whole paycheck goes through the table.
- TDI (temporary disability insurance, which includes temporary caregiver insurance) is 1.1% of wages up to $100,000 in 2026, at most $1,100 for the year. Employees pay it; employers don't add to it.
What this leaves out
- RI W-4 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Bonuses paid separately (Rhode Island's supplemental rate is 5.99%)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Rhode Island paycheck calculator: common questions
What is the Rhode Island income tax rate for 2026?
Three rates: 3.75% on taxable income up to $82,050, 4.75% up to $186,450 and 5.99% above that. Withholding uses the same brackets for every filing status, after $1,000 a year for each exemption on Form RI W-4.
How much Rhode Island tax comes out of $2,195 a week?
With one exemption, $87.57, from the Division of Taxation's own example: $2,195.00 less $19.23 is $2,175.77. The first $1,578 is taxed $59.18 and the remaining $597.77 at 4.75% adds $28.39.
What is Rhode Island TDI on a paycheck?
Temporary disability insurance, which also pays for temporary caregiver insurance. In 2026 it is 1.1% of wages up to $100,000, so at most $1,100 for the year. A full-time worker on $16 an hour pays about $7.04 a week.
Do I need a Rhode Island W-4?
Yes. Since 1 January 2020 employers must use Form RI W-4 for Rhode Island withholding; the federal Form W-4 can't be used for it. The employee fills it in when they start, and again to change their Rhode Island withholding.
Why does a high earner get no exemption?
Rhode Island's tables drop the exemption amount to zero once wages pass $290,800 a year ($5,592.31 a week, $11,184.62 every two weeks). Above that, the whole paycheck goes through the rate table.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a Rhode Island pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Rhode Island as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Rhode Island lines.
