The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Virginia income tax follows Virginia Tax's formula for wages paid after 1 July 2025: annual pay less the $8,750 standard deduction, $930 per VA-4 personal or dependent exemption and $800 per age 65 or blind exemption, taxed at 2% on the first $3,000, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above, then divided over the pay periods.
What this leaves out
- VA-4 age 65 and blind exemptions and additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles them)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Virginia paycheck calculator: common questions
How is Virginia income tax withheld from a paycheck?
Pay is annualized, the $8,750 standard deduction and the VA-4 exemptions come off, Virginia's four rates apply (2%, 3%, 5% and 5.75%), and the result is divided back to one paycheck.
What's the Virginia standard deduction for withholding?
$8,750 a year for single filers in Virginia's withholding formula for 2026. The higher amount is scheduled to end after tax year 2026.
What counts as an exemption on the VA-4?
One for the employee, one for a spouse, and one for each dependent, each worth $930 a year. Employees who are 65 or older, or blind, claim an extra $800 exemption each.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Virginia as the work state, it can calculate the same Virginia line.
