The official method, step by step

  • Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
  • Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
  • Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
  • Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
  • A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
  • Maryland withholding follows the Comptroller's 2026 percentage method: the $3,400 standard deduction and $3,200 for each MW507 exemption come off the year's pay, then state tax applies from 4.75% (Maryland doesn't withhold at its 2%–4% rates) up to 6.5%, using the single or the married/head of household brackets. The yearly figure is divided over the pay periods.
  • County (local) tax uses the county the employee lives in, at its actual 2026 rate on the same taxable pay: 2.25% (Worcester) to 3.30% (Dorchester and Kent), Anne Arundel's 2.70%/2.94%/3.20% brackets and Frederick's 2.25% to 3.20% by income level. The Comptroller's printed tables round each county up to the next table rate, so a payroll using them can withhold a few cents more. Employees who live outside Maryland pay the 2.25% nonresident rate instead.

What is the Maryland income tax rate for 2026?

State tax runs from 2% to 6.5%, but withholding starts at 4.75%. Single filers reach 5% over $100,000 of taxable income and 6.5% over $1 million; married couples filing jointly and heads of household reach 5% over $150,000. On top of that comes the county rate, from 2.25% to 3.30%.

Which county tax applies?
