The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Nebraska income tax follows the 2026 Circular EN percentage method: the value of the W-4N allowances comes off (for example $46.92 each a week), then the single or married table applies, from 2.26% to 4.60%.
- Circular EN sets a minimum: when the result is under 1.5% of wages, withholding is raised to at least half of what a single employee with one allowance (or a married employee with two) would have withheld, unless the employee documents a need for less.
What this leaves out
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Nebraska paycheck calculator: common questions
What is the Nebraska income tax rate for 2026?
Withholding rates run from 2.26% to 4.60%, after the W-4N allowances.
What is a W-4N?
Nebraska's own withholding certificate. Employees who filled in a federal W-4 in 2020 or later give their employer a W-4N for Nebraska allowances.
What is the 1.5% minimum?
Nebraska requires withholding of at least about 1.5% of wages. Below that, the employer withholds at least half of the one- or two-allowance amount unless the employee documents why less is needed.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Nebraska as the work state, it can calculate the same Nebraska line.
