ADP for a small business: pricing, what you get, when it's too much

Short answer

ADP's small-business product is RUN Powered by ADP, sold in four packages from Essential Payroll to HR Pro. All four include tax filing and direct deposit. ADP publishes no prices: each package has a Get pricing button. On 8 October 2026 it offered 3 free months to new clients with 1 to 49 employees.

ADP is the biggest name in US payroll, and its small-business line is built for 1 to 49 employees. This review sets out what its own pages say a small employer gets, what they leave out, and how to compare a quote you can't see in advance. Our ADP vs Paychex post covers the head-to-head; this one is about whether RUN fits a business of your size.

We haven't run payroll on these products. Everything here comes from each company's own public pages, read on 8 October 2026, and prices change: check the live page before you sign up.

What RUN Powered by ADP includes

Every RUN package covers the core payroll job. ADP's product page says RUN deducts and files federal, state and local payroll taxes, and that ADP creates W-2 and 1099 forms and e-files them with the IRS on your behalf.

PackageWhat ADP adds at this level
Essential PayrollPayroll by computer, app or phone, direct deposit, tax filing, new-hire reporting, reporting, 24/7 support
Enhanced PayrollState unemployment insurance management, garnishment payment service, job costing, labor law posters, check signing, electronic Form I-9, ZipRecruiter

Time and attendance, retirement, workers' compensation and health insurance are add-ons on every package. The grid marks W-2 and 1099 forms as an additional fee on all four.

How much does ADP cost for a small business?

ADP doesn't say. The packages page shows Get pricing and Get a quote instead of figures, and its FAQ says pricing depends on how often you run payroll and on the add-ons you choose. You only see a number after giving ADP your details.

  • Ask for the monthly figure at your pay frequency. Weekly payroll can cost more than twice-monthly.
  • Ask what W-2 and 1099 forms cost each year, since the grid lists them as an extra fee.
  • Ask whether the quote includes state unemployment insurance management, which starts at Enhanced.
  • Get the total for 12 months in writing, so you can compare it with providers that publish prices.

For scale, the providers that do publish prices listed full-service entry plans at $35 to $50 a month plus $6 to $7 per person on 8 October 2026 (Square, Gusto, QuickBooks). A written ADP quote is what lets you set it against those.

The 3 months free offer, read closely

ADP's banner offers 3 months free to small businesses. Its terms page narrows it: new ADP clients using RUN in the continental US, with 1 to 49 employees, paying fees by direct debit, who start processing payroll by 22 October 2026.

  • The free months are months 4, 5 and 6 of processing, not the first three.
  • It covers payroll processing only, not other non-payroll services, pass-through costs, delivery fees, off-cycle fees, hardware, penalties or interest.
  • You must keep the same bundle and payroll frequency for three consecutive months, and it can't be combined with other promotions.

What to have ready before you ask ADP for a price

A quote is only comparable if every provider prices the same job. Have these answers ready and give the same ones to ADP and to anyone you compare it with:

  1. How many employees and contractors you pay, and how many you expect to add in the next year.
  2. How often you pay: weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly.
  3. Every state where someone works, and any city with a local payroll tax.
  4. Which package features you actually need, so you can ask for Essential instead of a higher tier.
  5. Whether you want time tracking, workers' compensation or retirement, which ADP lists as add-ons.

Is ADP too much for a very small business?

It can be. RUN is a full-service product with HR tiers above it. A business with one or two steady employees in one state often needs only the Essential feature set, and may find a published-price plan or doing payroll itself simpler to budget for.

  • ADP makes sense if you want a large provider handling federal, state and local filings, expect to add HR services, or pay people in several states.
  • ADP also sells payroll for a single employee: its one-employee page is aimed at S corp owners and other solo businesses, again with no price shown.
  • It is harder to justify if you can't get a firm yearly figure, or if you have one employee and an accountant who already files your returns.

Where PayDocs fits

PayDocs isn't an ADP alternative for anyone who wants filings handled. If you run payroll yourself, it makes the pay stub for each period and W-2 copies at year end from your figures. PayDocs works out federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and supported state taxes for 2026 pay dates (see what we calculate). Previewing is free; a PDF is $4.99 per pay stub once checkout opens, less in packs of 4 or 12, with no monthly fee.

This is general information about US federal rules for employers as of 8 October 2026, not tax or legal advice. State and local rules can add to it.
