The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Minnesota income tax follows the 2026 computer formula in the Minnesota Withholding Tax Instructions and Tables: annual pay less $5,300 for each W-4MN allowance, then the single or married chart (5.35%, 6.8%, 7.85% and 9.85%), divided over the pay periods.
What this leaves out
- Minnesota Paid Leave premiums, which started in 2026
- W-4MN line 2 additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Minnesota paycheck calculator: common questions
What is the Minnesota income tax rate for 2026?
Minnesota has four rates: 5.35%, 6.8%, 7.85% and 9.85%. For withholding, a single employee's first $4,700 a year after allowances isn't taxed, and the rates start above that.
How much is a Minnesota withholding allowance worth?
$5,300 a year for each allowance claimed on Form W-4MN. The federal W-4 no longer sets Minnesota allowances, so employees fill in a W-4MN.
How is Minnesota tax withheld on $1,000 a week?
Single with one allowance: $52,000 − $5,300 = $46,700 a year; the single chart gives $1,782.09 plus 6.8% of the amount over $38,010, or $2,373.01, which is $45.63 a week.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. Turn this into a pay stub opens the pay stub generator with the paycheck filled in; with Minnesota as the work state, it can calculate the same Minnesota line.
