The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Montana income tax follows the Department of Revenue's 2026 withholding formula: nothing up to a threshold for the pay period and MW-4 filing status (the federal standard deduction spread over the year), 4.7% above it and 5.65% on higher pay, rounded to the nearest dollar. From 2026 Montana withholding uses no allowances.
What this leaves out
- MW-4 line 3 extra withholding, including the Multiple Jobs Worksheet amount (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Montana paycheck calculator: common questions
What changed in Montana withholding for 2026?
The top rate fell from 5.9% to 5.65%, and employees no longer claim Montana allowances. Withholding now works from the federal filing status and its standard deduction, much like the federal method.
How much Montana tax comes out of $1,375 twice a month?
From the Department's example, single: 4.7% of the $704 over $671 is $33. Married filing jointly: 4.7% of $33 over $1,342 rounds to $2.
What is line 2 on the MW-4?
Married couples filing jointly who both work and earn similar amounts mark line 2, and are withheld on the single tables. Couples with very different pay use the Multiple Jobs Worksheet instead and enter the result as extra withholding.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a Montana pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Montana as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Montana line.
