The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Maine income tax follows the percentage method in Maine Revenue Services' 2026 withholding tables, revised in August 2026: annual pay less $5,300 for each W-4ME allowance and a standard deduction ($12,850 single or $28,550 married, phased out at higher pay), taxed at 5.8%, 6.75% and 7.15%, plus a 2% surcharge on income over $1 million (single) or $1.5 million (married), divided over the pay periods and rounded to the nearest dollar.
What this leaves out
- W-4ME additional withholding (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them; Maine ignores Step 4(b))

Maine paycheck calculator: common questions
How much Maine tax is withheld on $1,000 a week?
From Maine Revenue Services' example, single with two allowances: $52,000 a year less $10,600 and the $12,850 deduction is $28,550; the withholding is $1,589 plus 6.75% of $1,150, about $1,667 a year, or $32 a week.
What changed in the August 2026 Maine withholding tables?
They reflect higher Maine standard deductions and a new 2% surcharge on income over $1 million for single filers and $1.5 million for married couples filing jointly, for tax years from 2026. Maine Revenue Services made them effective immediately.
Do I use the W-4 or the W-4ME for Maine?
Maine's own Form W-4ME sets the status and allowances for Maine withholding. Deductions claimed in Step 4(b) of the federal W-4 don't reduce Maine withholding.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make a Maine pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Maine as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Maine line.
