The official method, step by step
- Pay is annualized, then reduced by the Form W-4 amount for your filing status ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly) unless the Step 2 box is checked.
- Federal income tax comes from the IRS 2026 Annual Percentage Method table for that status, divided back to one paycheck.
- Social security is 6.2% of wages until the year's wages reach $184,500.
- Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 in the year.
- A pre-tax 401(k) lowers federal income tax wages, not social security or Medicare wages.
- Arizona income tax withholding is the percentage the employee picks on Form A-4 (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% or 3.5%) times gross taxable wages: gross pay less pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), the wages that go in box 1 of Form W-2. Without a Form A-4 the employer withholds 2.0%.
What this leaves out
- The Form A-4 extra amount each paycheck (the pay stub generator handles it)
- Benefits, garnishments and other after-tax deductions
- W-4 Step 3 credits and Step 4 entries (the pay stub generator handles them)

Arizona paycheck calculator: common questions
How much Arizona tax is withheld from a paycheck?
The percentage on the employee's Form A-4, applied to gross taxable wages. An employee who hasn't given the employer a Form A-4 has 2.0% withheld.
Which Arizona withholding percentage should I pick?
Form A-4 offers 0.5% to 3.5% in half-point steps, plus an extra dollar amount. Arizona's income tax rate is a flat 2.5%, but deductions and credits mean most people owe less than 2.5% of their wages; the right choice depends on your own return. An employee who expects no Arizona tax for the year can elect zero.
What are gross taxable wages in Arizona?
The wages that will generally appear in box 1 of your federal Form W-2: gross pay less pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions and your share of health insurance premiums.
Can I make a pay stub from this?
Yes. “Make an Arizona pay stub with these numbers” opens the pay stub generator with this paycheck, Arizona as the work state and these deductions filled in. Once you add the pay date, it can recalculate the same Arizona line.
