What’s on a payslip
A payslip (also called a wage slip, pay slip, salary slip or PAYE payslip) is the statement of pay and deductions an employee gets each payday. Every PayDocs payslip has the same six parts, in the order a reader looks for them.
- Employer and employee
- The business paying, the person being paid, and an optional payroll or works number.
- Tax period and pay date
- The period the pay covers and the date it was paid.
- Gross pay
- Salary for the period, or hours × rate, plus overtime, bonus or other earnings lines.
- Deductions
- PAYE income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and anything else deducted, copied from your payroll record.
- Net pay
- Take-home pay: gross pay minus deductions, plus any expenses reimbursed.
- Year-to-date totals
- Running totals for the tax year, carried from the figures you enter.

What you have to give your employees
Employers must give employees and workers a payslip on or before payday. It can be printed or electronic. It has to show pay before and after deductions, the amount of any deductions that change each time (such as tax and National Insurance), and the hours worked if pay varies with time worked. Fixed deductions can be listed on the payslip or in a separate written statement.
GOV.UK notes that some payroll software won’t produce payslips. If yours doesn’t, make the payslip here from your payroll figures.

Making your own payslip: short answers
Can I make my own payslip?
Yes, if you are the employer. Small employers, including people who employ a nanny, carer or cleaner directly, can make payslips from their own payroll figures: enter the real pay, PAYE, National Insurance and other deductions, and the payslip adds them up. If you are the employee, ask your employer; they have to give you one.
Is it legal to make a payslip?
Yes, when it records pay that was really paid. GOV.UK says employers must give employees and workers a payslip on or before payday, and making one from your own payroll is how a small employer does that. A payslip with an invented employer or figures, used to get a mortgage, tenancy or benefit, is fraud.
Can ChatGPT make a payslip?
It can draft a layout, but it doesn't run payroll. PAYE and National Insurance depend on the tax code, the pay period and the tax year's running totals, and a chatbot can produce figures that look right and aren't. PayDocs works out PAYE and National Insurance from HMRC's published rules, shows how, and keeps every amount editable.
Can AI spot a fake payslip?
Often, yes. Lenders and letting agents check payslips against bank statements and with the employer, and automated checks look for tax, National Insurance and year-to-date totals that don't fit the tax code and pay period. A payslip made from real payroll passes because its figures are true. No layout makes invented figures pass, and PayDocs isn't built to.

Does PayDocs calculate PAYE and National Insurance?
Yes, for pay dates from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027: PayDocs can calculate PAYE income tax from the tax code, employee National Insurance, National Insurance for every category letter, student loan (Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5) and Postgraduate Loan deductions, workplace pension contributions (net pay, relief at source, salary sacrifice), company directors' National Insurance and statutory sick, maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental and bereavement pay, from the published rules named on each result. Every calculated line stays editable. You enter other deductions, such as salary advances or union fees from your own payroll records.
Is a wage slip the same as a payslip?
Yes. Wage slip, pay slip, salary slip and PAYE payslip are other names for the same document: the statement of pay before and after deductions an employee gets each payday. This generator makes all of them.
Can I make payslips for hourly workers?
Yes. Choose hourly pay and enter the hours and rate; add an extra rate for overtime and any other earnings as separate lines. Each line is worked out as hours × rate for you.
Does the payslip show year-to-date totals?
Yes. Enter the totals from the tax year so far before this payment, and PayDocs adds this period to them.
Which payslip templates can I choose from?
Six: Classic, Modern, Compact, Executive, Bold and Minimal. You can switch layout at any point while you create, and the figures stay the same.
What must a UK payslip show?
GOV.UK says a payslip must show pay before and after deductions, the deductions that can change each payday such as tax and National Insurance, and the hours worked if pay depends on time worked. It must be given on or before payday.
Do I have to give my employees payslips?
Yes. GOV.UK says employees and workers must get a payslip on or before payday, printed or electronic. Contractors and freelancers are not covered. If you employ a nanny, carer or cleaner directly, that includes you.
Can I use a PayDocs payslip as proof of income?
No. PayDocs lays out figures you provide. It does not verify employment, certify income, or guarantee that anyone will accept the document. Only enter real figures from payroll you are authorised to prepare.
Do I need an account?
Not to create or preview. You need a free account to save drafts, keep your employees and documents, and duplicate a document for the next pay period. An unsaved draft is kept only in the browser tab you work in: refreshing the page offers to restore it, and closing the tab clears it.
