What goes on a payslip
Every PayDocs payslip has the same six parts, in the order a reader looks for them.
- Employer and employee
- The business paying, the person being paid, and an optional payroll or works number.
- Tax period and pay date
- The period the pay covers and the date it was paid.
- Gross pay
- Salary for the period, or hours × rate, plus overtime, bonus or other earnings lines.
- Deductions
- PAYE income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and anything else deducted, copied from your payroll record.
- Net pay
- Take-home pay: gross pay minus deductions, plus any expenses reimbursed.
- Year-to-date totals
- Running totals for the tax year, carried from the figures you enter.
PayDocs can calculate PAYE from the tax code and employee National Insurance for 2026/27, using HMRC's published method; every calculated line stays editable. Pension, student loan and other deductions come from your payroll record, and the arithmetic (totals, net pay, year to date) is done for you.
Payslips, explained
What is PAYE on a payslip?
PAYE on a payslip is the Income Tax your employer takes from your pay for HMRC. What it means, how your tax code affects it, and more.
Your payslip explained, line by line
Understanding your payslip: what each part of a UK payslip means, from tax code and NI number to gross pay, deductions, net pay and year-to-date totals.
UK tax codes on a payslip
What the tax code on your payslip means: the numbers, the letters (L, M, N, T, BR, D0, D1, NT, K, S, C) and emergency codes, as defined by GOV.UK.
How do I make a payslip?
Enter the employer and employee details, the pay period, then the earnings and deductions from your payroll record. The payslip builds in the preview as you type. Pick one of six layouts and review it before you finish.
Is the payslip generator free?
Creating and previewing a payslip is free, with no account or card. The finished PDF, without the watermark, is £3.99; checkout opens at launch.
Does PayDocs calculate PAYE and National Insurance?
Yes. PayDocs can work out PAYE from the tax code and employee National Insurance using HMRC's published method for 2026/27. Pension and student loan deductions are entered from your payroll.
Can I make payslips for hourly workers?
Yes. Choose hourly pay and enter the hours and rate; add an extra rate for overtime and any other earnings as separate lines. Each line is worked out as hours × rate for you.
Does the payslip show year-to-date totals?
Yes. Enter the totals from the tax year so far before this payment, and PayDocs adds this period to them.
Which payslip templates can I choose from?
Six: Classic, Modern, Compact, Executive, Bold and Minimal. You can switch layout at any point while you create, and the figures stay the same.
What must a UK payslip show?
GOV.UK says a payslip must show pay before and after deductions, the deductions that can change each payday such as tax and National Insurance, and the hours worked if pay depends on time worked. It must be given on or before payday.
Can I use a PayDocs payslip as proof of income?
No. PayDocs lays out figures you provide. It does not verify employment, certify income, or guarantee that anyone will accept the document. Only enter real figures from payroll you are authorised to prepare.
Do I need an account?
No. You can build and preview a payslip without signing up. With an account, your employees are saved and you can duplicate a payslip for the next pay period in one click.
