How many pay periods are in a year? 2027 weekly, biweekly and semimonthly counts

Short answer

A year has 52 weekly pay periods, 26 biweekly, 24 semimonthly and 12 monthly. In 2027 the calendar adds a twist: 1 January is a Friday, so the year has 53 Fridays. A weekly Friday payroll can have 53 paydays, and a biweekly payroll with a payday on 1 January 2027 has 27.

Pick weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly to list each payday in 2027, moved off weekends and bank holidays, and see how many pay periods the year has.

The standard counts are fixed, and IRS Publication 15-T uses them in its withholding worksheets. The actual number of paydays in a calendar year depends on the weekday and the date of your first payday. This post gives both for 2027, with the holiday paydays to plan around and what an extra payday does to salaried pay.

Weekly and biweekly schedules count weeks, and 52 weeks is 364 days. The leftover day (two in a leap year) is why some years have an extra payday. Semimonthly and monthly schedules count calendar dates, so they never drift.

How many pay periods are there in 2027?

It depends on your payday. 2027 starts on a Friday and isn't a leap year, so it has 53 Fridays and 52 of every other weekday. Counting paydays by pay date:

Paydays in calendar year 2027 (counted from the 2027 calendar)

Weekly, paid FridayFriday 1 January53
Weekly, paid any other weekdayFirst of that weekday52
Biweekly, paid Friday, cycle AFriday 1 January27 (last: Friday 31 December)
Biweekly, paid Friday, cycle BFriday 8 January26 (last: Friday 24 December)
Biweekly, paid any other weekdayEither cycle26
Semimonthly (15th and last day)15 January24
MonthlyJanuary payday12

Only one biweekly cycle gets 27 paydays in 2027: the one with a payday on Friday 1 January. In 2026 the extra payday falls to Thursday payrolls, because 2026 started on a Thursday.

Pay date (check date)

Paydays that land on a holiday or weekend in 2027

Several 2027 Fridays are federal holidays on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) calendar. Many employers move a payday that falls on a holiday to the business day before. Moving the 1 January 2027 payday back to Thursday 31 December 2026 also moves it into 2026: Form W-2 reports wages paid during the calendar year, so that check counts toward 2026, and the 2027 count drops by one.

Semimonthly payrolls meet weekends instead. In 2027 the 15th or the last day of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday on 31 January, 28 February, 15 May, 31 July, 15 August and 31 October, and on federal holidays on Monday 15 February (Washington's Birthday) and Monday 31 May (Memorial Day). State payday laws can decide whether you pay early or late, so check yours.

What a 27th or 53rd payday does to salaried pay

For hourly staff an extra payday is just pay for hours worked. For salaried staff you have to choose: divide the salary by the usual count and pay an extra check in 2027, or divide by the larger count so the year's total stays the same. Decide before January and tell employees, because it changes either each check or the year's total.

Where PayDocs fits

The free salary paycheck calculator splits an annual salary by pay frequency and estimates the 2026 federal, Social Security, Medicare and supported state tax on each paycheck. The pay stub generator puts the pay period dates and pay date on each stub, with year-to-date totals that follow the calendar year; PayDocs works out federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and supported state taxes for 2026 pay dates (see what we calculate).

Payday counts above are worked out from the 2027 calendar; holidays are OPM's. State payday rules and your bank's processing days can change when a payment actually lands. This is general information, not legal advice.

Questions

How many pay periods are in a year?

52 for weekly pay, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semimonthly and 12 for monthly. Weekly and biweekly schedules sometimes have one extra payday in a calendar year: 53 or 27.

How many biweekly pay periods are in 2027?

26 for most schedules. A biweekly payroll with a payday on Friday 1 January 2027 has 27, ending on Friday 31 December 2027, unless the 1 January payday is moved into 2026.

Why does 2027 have 53 Fridays?

A non-leap year is 52 weeks and one day. 2027 starts on a Friday, so that extra day is a Friday, and the year has 53 of them.

How many weekly pay periods are in 2027?

52 for most weekly payrolls. A payroll paid every Friday has 53 paydays in 2027, because the year starts on a Friday, unless the 1 January payday is paid early on 31 December 2026.

Does a semimonthly schedule ever have 25 paydays?

No. Semimonthly pay is tied to two dates a month, usually the 15th and the last day, so there are always 24 pay periods. Weekends and holidays move a payday but don't add one.

What happens to salaried pay in a 27-paycheck year?

Either the employee gets an extra check on top of the usual 26 (a higher year's total), or the salary is divided by 27 that year so each check is smaller. Pick one before the year starts and tell employees.
